Nature's Bounty Acidophilus Probiotic
Nature’s Bounty Probiotic Acidophilus Tablets are a small supplement with one single strain of probiotic: Lactobacillus acidophilus. They contain a fair amount of live cultures considering the quality of their bottle as well as their encapsulation. The label specifies that “100 Million Organisms” is at the time of manufacture. The live culture count upon reaching the shelf is considerably lower. Per cost, the strain count is acceptably effective.
Overall Rating
What to expect from the strain
Lactobacillus Acidophilus is the most common probiotic strain. It is also very well documented and researched, and one of the few probiotic strains that can survive stomach acid to populate the lower intestine, whether or not it is in time-released, enteric coated capsules. It’s reported to treat a variety of health symptoms, and is most commonly acquired for vaginal yeast infections, general bloating, and IBS symptoms.
The Good
Even with their lower-rated live organism count, the cost of Nature’s Bounty makes it a supplement that’s easy for anyone to add to their shelf. Their product also lists several allergens and irritants it does not contain, and this may be important for particular users. Nature’s Bounty is also widely available in stores. This increases storage and shelf time, but may make it more accessible.
We recommend speaking with a healthcare professional before beginning a new supplement if you have any concerns about medication interactions or pre-existing conditions. Pregnant and nursing women should be sure to speak with their physician.
The Bad
While Lactobacillus Acidophilus is an established strain in the scientific community, this supplement overlooks the wide range of intestinal flora necessary for a functional, healthy digestive tract. There are several probiotic strains with proven benefits and many are as effective or more effective than L. Acidophilus, and when combined make a more effective supplement.
It also has an unacceptably low live organism count — to be effective, probiotics need to contain at least 10 Billion CFU.
Users occasionally reported little to no results with the product.
On the bottle, it is indicated in fine print that it needs to be stored in the refrigerator. This causes concern about shipping and storage, especially with a probiotic that is sold retail — in this case, the manufacturer’s no longer have control over storage temperatures or length of storage time.
