Lactobacillus bulgaricus, also known as Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus is a member of the acidophilus group of lactic acid group of bacteria and Firmicutes phylum (1,2,3). Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus is one of the subspecies of Lactobacillus delbrueckii along with Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. delbrueckii, and the more recently discovered subspecies’ indicus, jakobsenii, and sunkii (3,4).
